My web guru is "Jakob Nielsen":http://www.useit.com/. I studied his books when i was working at "MIR":http://www.mir.com.my, and i think this gave me a solid grounding in understanding web usability. I'm certainly no expert, but i think Nielsen advocates a few rules that, if followed, will ensure you won't go wrong (or too wrong).
bq. Rule #1: "Simplicity is priceless":http://www.infoconomy.com/pages/information-age/group44399.adp
Rule #2: "Don't be too clever":http://www.infomaticsonline.co.uk/News/1136781
Rule #3: "Be accessible":http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2002/1202/mgt-access-12-02-02.asp
Rule #4: "Make the web usable":http://www.boxesandarrows.com/archives/002321.php
Rule #5: "Bad designs kill websites":http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A48167-2001Oct24¬Found=true
