24 hours since i got the Palm Zire 71. What do i think of it? Excellent, though not perfect. The following is a quick list of what i like about it:
- The bundled software - everything you need to make the Z71 an instant productivity and entertainment tool. Of particular value is the excellent VersaMail; i was checking and writing email with great ease - the Zire connects blissfully well with my Nokia 6610. Maxis 9.6kb WAP connection allows me to download and send email (and browse websites too); surprisingly fast for such an archaic connection speed.
- Sending SMS via the Palm! Oh pure joy!
- The screen, i tell you, is to die for! Its even better that what the reviews described it to be. The very BEST screen i've seen on ANY PDA.
- Graffiti 2 is a major upgrade from the old one. Damned if i know why there was such a bruhaha about it when it was first launched.
- The "joystick button" is quite useful - taking a bit of time to get used to it, but i reckon it'll probably make the stylus obsolete for simple tasks such as scrolling and reading. Much more handy than the Sony Jog Dials that i've tested on the Clies.
- MP3 sounds good: clear and rich, better than the iPaq PPCs but not as good as the Clies which manage to produce slightly more satisfying audio
But it ain't all good, i'm afraid:
- The camera is not anything to write home about. If you thought that the convergence of technologies will make a separate digi cam unnecessary, think again. Below are some same pics (unedited except for the size, reduced from 640x480res):

Me, with a simple smile - The Texas Instruments 144Mhz OMAP310 (ARM) processor isn't as fast as claimed - there is a discernible lag when viewing content via AvantGo.
- Surface is fingerprint-prone: for the clean-freaks out there, this ain't the device for you.
- Palm Phone Link updater software doesn't install properly - if you're using a phone besides the latest Nokias and Ericssons, it may be very difficult to update the drivers necessary for the Z71 to work properly with your phone.
- Palm Tech Support sucks - wrote to them about the problem above. Its like sending an email into a black hole.
