After making an offering to the PDA Gods, running around naked in my garden, staring at the heavens for a sign, scattering chicken bones in a bowl to discern the signs, peering at the bottom of my cup to read the tea leaves - after doing all of that and much much more than i can't publish in good conscience (children may be reading this), i've finally narrowed my search for the -Holy Grail-, errr, the PDA down to either of the following:
# "Clie PEG-SJ33/G":http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001708,39114720,00.htm
# "Palm Zire 71":http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1040088,00.asp
The Palm has got a few major advantages: it was a stereo MP3 player (unlike the Tung|C or W), runs on "Palm OS 5.2":http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=4777, and has a camera + Secure Digital cards are cheaper than Memory Sticks. Its only major disadvantage against the Clie is that it only plays MP3s and not the ATRAC3 format. The ATRAC3 format would allow me to save up to 90 CD-quality songs on a 128MB MagicGate Memory Stick. The downside to this upside (do you think i've been thinking about this too much?) is that the Clie only has enough battery power to keep it going for 4-5 hours non-stop (the Zire has the same battery strength); 4-5 hours is no where near enough to play 90 songs at a go, so what's the point of being able to have that many songs available? Also, the ATRAC3 format can be "quite a hassle":http://it.asia1.com.sg/reviews/port/por001_20000524.html since it places restrictions on the way the encoded track is distributed and used.
