I was a pretty geeky kid. Specs, belly, pimples, i used to stutter a lot, i played chess, and i read fantasy novels. There wasn't much to look forward to going to school each day (i was bullied a lot), except for that early morning bus ride.
For some God forsaken reason, the school bus (a small little orange number), picked me up first each morning at the crack of dawn before making the rounds to pick up the other kids. I didn't mind one bit, because i was going to see Her.
I can't remember her name or even what she looks like anymore, but Her is that girl you wish would notice you, but never does. That popular girl on the bus whom you hope would smile at you, that girl whom you try to make eye contact with, but are always too shy to do it.
Over the months, i paid attention. I noted which seat on the bus she would prefer. Then i used to take the seat next to her favourite with the hope she would sit next to me. That didn't work; she always chose to sit elsewhere.
Then i tried sitting near the front of the bus, right at the steps. As she climbed up, i tried to smile at her and hope that she would take notice and smile back. Alas, it was too dark in the morning for her to ever notice my smile, so she never once smiled back.
The years past by. And soon the opportunity was lost as we both finished school and moved on. The morning bus rides were over.
